Can You Get Laser Eye Surgery for Long-Sightedness?

Yes. Laser eye surgery can correct long-sightedness (hyperopia) for many adults, although the best treatment depends on the strength of your prescription, the shape of your cornea and, importantly, your age. Someone who has struggled to focus comfortably since their twenties may need a very different approach from someone who first notices blurred reading vision in their forties.

That distinction matters. Long-sightedness and age-related difficulty with reading are often described in the same way, but they happen for different reasons. Understanding which one is affecting your eyes is the first step towards finding a treatment that will genuinely help.

In brief: LASIK or surface laser treatment can improve suitable hyperopic prescriptions by reshaping the cornea. If you also have presbyopia, a blended-vision treatment or lens-based option may be more appropriate. No single technique suits everyone.

What Does Long-Sightedness Actually Mean?

In an eye without a significant refractive error, light is focused on the retina at the back of the eye. In hyperopia, the eye is often slightly shorter than average or its focusing power is relatively weak, so incoming light would focus behind the retina if the eye did not compensate. The eye’s natural focusing system can sometimes overcome this, particularly in younger people, but doing so may cause strain, headaches and tired eyes.

Some long-sighted people see reasonably well in the distance but struggle with close work. Others, especially those with stronger prescriptions, experience blurred vision at both distances. The plus sign on a spectacle prescription, such as +2.00 or +4.00 dioptres (D), indicates the amount of long-sighted correction required.

Our guide to hyperopia and its treatment explores the condition in greater detail, including how specialists assess the prescription and corneal structure.

Hyperopia and Presbyopia Are Not the Same Thing

It is easy to confuse the two because both can make reading uncomfortable. Hyperopia is a refractive error related to the eye’s optical power. Presbyopia is the gradual loss of flexibility in the natural lens, which usually becomes noticeable during the forties. A person can have either condition, or both at once.

特點 Long-sightedness (hyperopia) 老花眼
Underlying cause Eye shape or focusing power 與年齡有關的晶狀體彈性損失
When it begins Can be present from childhood Usually noticeable from the forties
Typical symptoms Eye strain; near or distance blur depending on severity Difficulty reading close print, particularly in dim light
Possible treatment Glasses, contact lenses or suitable refractive surgery Reading glasses, blended-vision laser treatment or selected lens procedures

For a closer look at age-related near-vision changes, read our article on presbyopia and life without reading glasses. It explains why a conventional distance correction does not stop the natural ageing of the lens.

How Does Laser Eye Surgery Correct Long-Sightedness?

Unlike laser treatment for short-sightedness, which generally flattens the central cornea, hyperopic laser correction changes the cornea’s curvature to increase its focusing power. The laser removes a carefully calculated pattern of tissue towards the peripheral treatment zone, creating a relatively steeper central optical surface. Light can then be focused more accurately onto the retina.

Modern laser systems use detailed measurements of the cornea and prescription to plan the treatment. Even so, the eye’s response is individual, and higher hyperopic prescriptions can be less predictable than lower ones. The surgeon must also account for corneal thickness, shape, tear film quality and the risk of regression, where some of the original prescription returns over time.

Which Treatments Can Correct Long-Sightedness?

There is more than one route to clearer vision. The choice is not simply between having laser surgery and doing nothing; the most appropriate option depends on whether the problem lies mainly in the cornea’s refractive power, the ageing natural lens or a combination of factors.

CORNEAL LASER
LASIK
Often considered for suitable mild-to-moderate hyperopia. A thin flap is created before the underlying cornea is reshaped. Suitability depends on the full clinical assessment.
SURFACE LASER
PRK / LASEK
May be considered when a flap-based procedure is less appropriate. Recovery is usually slower and more uncomfortable during the first few days.
BLENDED VISION
長老
Designed for selected patients with presbyopia, sometimes alongside hyperopia. It aims to extend useful near, intermediate and distance vision.

For people whose main frustration is switching between distance and reading glasses, PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision may be worth discussing. It is not simply standard LASIK for long-sightedness: it is a different treatment strategy that balances the eyes’ focusing roles. Patients need to be assessed for their tolerance of blended vision as well as their corneal suitability.

What Prescription Is Too Strong for Laser Eye Surgery?

There is no universal prescription cut-off that makes laser surgery suitable or unsuitable for everyone. The EuroEyes hyperopia treatment information describes laser correction up to approximately +4.00D in selected patients, but this is a guide rather than a promise of eligibility. Higher prescriptions can require greater corneal reshaping, and the predictability of the result may be reduced.

Understanding your prescription
Long-sightedness (hyperopia) prescription scale
A positive (+) prescription is measured in dioptres (D). As the number increases, laser treatment may require more careful consideration. These ranges are a guide, not a test of suitability.
+1.00D+2.00D+3.00D+4.00D+5.00D+6.00D+
+1.00D to +2.00D
Lower hyperopia
Laser correction may be possible when the prescription is stable and the cornea and eyes are healthy.
+2.25D to +4.00D
Moderate hyperopia
Detailed corneal measurements and discussion of treatment predictability become particularly important.
Above +4.00D
Higher hyperopia
Laser correction may still be possible for selected patients, but lens-based alternatives deserve consideration.
UK clinical guidance: The Royal College of Ophthalmologists identifies up to +4.00D as a range more likely to be suitable for laser vision correction. Prescription alone cannot determine eligibility; age, corneal measurements, eye health and treatment technology also matter. Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

These are illustrative prescription bands, not clinical eligibility rules. Your measured prescription, including any hidden hyperopia revealed during examination, may differ from the number on your everyday glasses.

Can You Have Laser Eye Surgery for Long-Sightedness After 40?

Yes, potentially, but treatment planning becomes more nuanced. By the time someone reaches their forties, the natural lens is gradually losing its ability to focus up close. Correcting hyperopia alone may improve distance vision without removing the need for reading glasses. In some cases, a patient who has relied on their natural focusing ability for years becomes more aware of near-vision limitations once that focusing reserve declines.

For this reason, a surgeon will discuss what you want your vision to do in everyday life. Someone who spends long days at a computer, reads frequently and drives at night may prioritise a different balance of vision from someone mainly concerned about distance clarity. Our guide to laser and lens surgery at different ages explores why the best option can change over time.

What If Laser Eye Surgery Is Not Suitable?

Not being eligible for corneal laser surgery does not automatically mean that vision correction is out of reach. For selected patients, lens-based procedures may be considered, particularly when the natural lens is already showing age-related changes or the prescription is outside the preferred laser treatment range.

One option is clear lens exchange, in which the natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens chosen for the patient’s visual needs. Lens replacement is a different operation from laser eye surgery, with its own benefits, risks and optical compromises. It is not routinely the best option for younger adults who still have a healthy, flexible natural lens.

Where cataracts are present, the conversation changes again. Surgery may address both the cloudy natural lens and some of the existing prescription, depending on the lens implant selected and the health of the eye.

Does Laser Correction for Long-Sightedness Last?

The reshaping of the cornea is intended to be lasting, but the eye itself continues to change. Hyperopic treatments can show some regression, particularly with higher prescriptions, and the natural lens will continue to age regardless of how successfully the cornea was treated. It is therefore more accurate to describe laser surgery as a long-term correction than as a guarantee that glasses will never be needed again.

Some people who underwent successful laser correction years earlier later find themselves reaching for reading glasses. That does not necessarily mean the original surgery has failed. The article can you have laser eye surgery twice? explains how surgeons assess changing prescriptions, previous corneal treatment and possible enhancement options.

How Safe Is Laser Eye Surgery for Hyperopia?

Modern laser eye surgery has a well-established safety record in appropriately selected patients, but no surgical procedure is risk-free. Temporary dry eyes, glare, halos and fluctuating vision can occur. Less common complications include infection, inflammation, persistent visual symptoms and changes to corneal stability. The exact balance of risks varies with the treatment, prescription and individual eye measurements.

The important question is not whether a particular procedure is universally safe, but whether it is appropriate for your eyes. Thorough diagnostic screening, realistic expectations and access to follow-up care matter just as much as the laser itself. The independent NHS overview of laser eye and lens surgery provides additional information about treatment options and potential complications.

What Happens During a Suitability Assessment?

A specialist examination looks beyond the number on your glasses prescription. Your surgeon will consider how stable the prescription has been, the shape and thickness of your cornea, the quality of your tear film, the condition of the natural lens and your visual priorities. They may also use drops to relax the eye’s focusing muscles, helping reveal the full extent of hyperopia that can otherwise be partly concealed by accommodation.

These measurements help determine whether LASIK, surface laser treatment, blended vision or a lens-based approach deserves consideration. They also help identify when surgery should be postponed or avoided. You can explore how EuroEyes approaches diagnostics and treatment planning through its advanced vision technology centre.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Eye Surgery for Long-Sightedness

Can LASIK correct a plus prescription?
Yes. LASIK can correct suitable hyperopic prescriptions by increasing the cornea’s focusing power. Eligibility depends on the prescription, corneal measurements and general eye health.
Is long-sighted laser eye surgery different from short-sighted treatment?
Yes. Both reshape the cornea, but the treatment profiles differ. Hyperopic laser treatment aims to steepen the central optical surface, while myopic treatment generally flattens it.
Will I still need reading glasses after surgery?
Possibly. Standard hyperopic laser correction does not prevent presbyopia, so reading glasses may still be needed as the natural lens ages. Blended-vision treatments may reduce dependence on them for suitable patients.
Can I have laser eye surgery if I am +5.00D?
A +5.00D prescription is above the approximate +4.00D range described in EuroEyes’ general hyperopia information. It does not automatically determine the answer, but it makes a detailed discussion of suitability and alternatives especially important.
Can long-sightedness return after laser eye surgery?
Some regression is possible, and age-related changes to the natural lens can also affect vision. A change in eyesight years later does not necessarily mean the original treatment was unsuccessful.
Is SMILE Pro used to correct long-sightedness?
SMILE Pro is most commonly associated with correcting short-sightedness and astigmatism. Hyperopic treatment availability and regulatory indications vary by platform and location. Patients with hyperopia should not assume that SMILE Pro is an available or appropriate option without confirmation from their surgeon.

Understanding Your Options

Long-sightedness is not one single visual problem, and there is no single treatment that solves every version of it. For a younger adult with stable hyperopia and healthy corneas, conventional laser correction may be a reasonable option. For someone also experiencing presbyopia, blended vision or a lens-based approach may deserve closer attention. The most useful outcome of a specialist assessment is not simply being told that surgery is possible, but understanding which approach offers the right balance of clarity, comfort and long-term expectations for your eyes.
