What Are The Three Types Of Laser Eye Surgery?

The Three Main Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Modern laser eye surgery has evolved significantly over the past two decades, with several advanced procedures now available to treat short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. In this video, Dr. Jannik Boberg-Ans explains the three main types of laser eye surgery and how each procedure works to improve visual clarity and reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

PRK is one of the original forms of laser eye surgery and is still widely used today for suitable patients. During the procedure, the outer surface layer of the cornea is gently removed before the laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue. PRK can be particularly beneficial for patients with thinner corneas or those involved in contact sports where preserving corneal strength is important. Although recovery is slightly longer compared to other treatments, PRK remains a highly effective long-term solution for many prescriptions.

Femto LASIK

Femto LASIK is one of the most commonly performed laser eye procedures worldwide. It uses a highly advanced femtosecond laser to create an ultra-thin corneal flap before a second laser reshapes the cornea to correct vision. The treatment is known for its precision, rapid visual recovery and minimal discomfort. Many patients notice significantly clearer vision within just 24 hours following surgery.

ReLEx SMILE

ReLEx SMILE is a newer generation laser eye procedure designed to be minimally invasive. Instead of creating a flap, the laser creates a small lens-shaped piece of tissue inside the cornea, which is then removed through a tiny opening. This approach preserves more of the corneal structure and may help reduce dry eye symptoms for some patients. SMILE is particularly popular among younger, active patients looking for a modern approach to laser vision correction.

During the consultation process, detailed eye scans and measurements help determine which type of laser eye surgery may be the safest and most effective option for each individual patient.
