The lens in our eyes can naturally change the refractive power of light by contracting and expanding, in a process called accommodation. This elasticity of the lens is what allows us to see things clearly at different distances.
However, as we age, the natural eye lens loses elasticity in various places. This means that focusing becomes difficult at various distances.
From the age of around 40, you may find that it’s increasingly difficult to see objects at a close distance, such as reading a book or looking at your phone. You may find that you instinctively move these objects further away so you can focus, but this isn’t a long-term solution.
Instead, wearing glasses can allow you to easily focus. Or, if you don’t want to wear glasses, you may opt for surgery.
The Presbyond® Laser Blended Vision method is a modern and safe laser eye treatment for presbyopia. It involves separately optimising each eye for near and far-sighted vision.
While this may seem strange at first, the brain soon adapts and blends the two images so you can see both near and far without effort, as well as providing depth of focus and visual acuity without needing glasses or contact lenses.
Multifocal and trifocal lens surgery involves implanting artificial lenses in the eye, which are able to correctly change the refractive power of light in order to see things close up and at a distance. Because the lens is artificial, it doesn’t lose its properties over time like a natural lens, and so your vision remains constant and will no longer change as you age.
The procedure is relatively straight forward and takes around 15 minutes per eye to complete.
Our team are experts at performing lens surgery, as well as Presbyond® Laser Blended Vision surgery. As a member of the EuroEyes International Eye Group (EE), EuroEyes London is part of the leading eye clinic groups for lens and laser vision correction worldwide.

Presbyopia is an age-related condition where the eye’s natural lens loses flexibility, making it difficult to focus on near objects. It typically starts affecting people after the age of 40 and is a natural part of the aging process. Many Londoners first notice it when reading small text or using their phone becomes difficult without holding it at arm’s length.
Yes, advanced laser treatments such as PresbyMAX® or LASIK Blended Vision can reshape the cornea to improve near and distance vision. However, for some patients, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Implantable Contact Lenses (ICLs) may be a more suitable long-term solution. At EuroEyes London, we assess each patient’s vision to recommend the best treatment.
The best treatment depends on factors like age, lifestyle, and overall eye health. Options include:\n – Laser eye surgery (PresbyMAX® / LASIK Blended Vision) – Ideal for mild-to-moderate presbyopia.\n – Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) – Recommended for those over 50, replacing the aging lens with an advanced intraocular lens (IOL).\n – Multifocal or Trifocal Lens Implants – A long-term solution for clear vision at all distances.\n Our EuroEyes London specialists will determine the most effective option during a consultation.
The cost depends on the procedure: – Laser eye surgery for presbyopia: From £2,500 per eye – Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE): From £3,500 per eye\n – Premium multifocal/trifocal lens implants: From £3,800 per eye. At our London clinic, we offer a range of finance options to help make treatment more accessible. Subject to affordability, age and status, and minimum spend applies.
Laser eye surgery: Most patients experience clearer vision within 24-48 hours, with full recovery in a few weeks.\n – Lens-based procedures (RLE or IOLs): Recovery takes longer (around 1-2 weeks) but provides a permanent solution for age-related vision loss.\n Patients at EuroEyes London receive comprehensive aftercare to ensure a smooth recovery.
Most patients experience a significant reduction in their dependence on glasses, especially with multifocal lens implants or advanced laser treatments. However, factors like age, pre-existing eye conditions, and individual healing may mean some patients still require reading glasses for fine print or very dim lighting. Our surgeons will discuss realistic outcomes during your consultation.
