Milestone in Tanzania: EuroEyes Supports the Opening of a New Eye Clinic

Through the vision of Dr Jannik Boberg-Ans and Dr Gøril Boberg-Ans, in partnership with EuroEyes, a modern eye clinic has been established in Tanzania, offering renewed hope for improved access to specialist eye care. The project combines world-class medicine with an innovative academy model, designed to build and sustain medical expertise directly within the local community.

A Passion Project Becomes Reality

In January, Dr Jørgensen of EuroEyes proudly attended the official opening ceremony of the new eye clinic in Karatu. The clinic represents the life’s work of Dr Jannik Boberg-Ans (Partner and Medical Director of EuroEyes Copenhagen) and his wife, Dr Gøril Boberg-Ans. After years of meticulous planning and personal dedication, they have created a centre that is transforming the medical landscape of the region.

The opening was a deeply moving occasion, celebrated alongside local government officials, representatives of the Karatu Lutheran Hospital, bishops, clinic staff, as well as friends and family. For Gøril and Jannik and for everyone who believed in this vision, the day marked a turning point in access to ophthalmic care across the region.

EuroEyes is honoured to support this meaningful and impactful initiative and to play a part in its success.

From Vision to Implementation

The journey began in September 2022, when Jannik and Gøril first approached the Karatu Lutheran Hospital to explore the possibility of establishing a permanent eye clinic.

The objective was clear: to ensure sustainable, high-quality ophthalmic care for the region. At that time, the area; serving a population of more than 300,000 people, had no permanent eye care facility. The nearest specialised eye centre was over 250 kilometres away.

Construction of the clinic commenced in February 2025 and was completed by August 2025. The result is a modern, fully accessible facility that not only meets high medical standards but also provides long-term security and opportunity for the local population.

A Commitment to Lasting Impact

The mission of the clinic extends far beyond treatment alone. It is designed as a permanent centre for both care and education, where patients are treated safely and in accordance with the highest international standards. At the same time, the clinic operates as an academy, with its daily work attracting patients from across northern Tanzania.

A particular focus lies in the transfer of knowledge. Ophthalmologists from the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi participate in every outreach programme and receive intensive, free surgical training. International participants attend structured training courses and pay a course fee, which directly supports the clinic’s operations and long-term sustainability.

Through this model, the clinic delivers not only immediate patient care but also strengthens local medical expertise, ensuring a lasting and meaningful impact for the wider community.
