Reading Glasses Getting in the Way? Life Without Them Could Be Closer Than You Think

Does this sound familiar? Without reading glasses, you need to hold the restaurant menu at arm’s length, while messages on your smartphone no longer look as clear as they once did. For many people over 40, reading glasses gradually become a constant companion. They are carried from room to room, taken to restaurants, packed for holidays and repeatedly misplaced. What many people do not realise is that reading glasses are not the only option.

Modern vision correction can offer suitable patients a long-term alternative, helping them regain greater visual freedom and reduce their dependence on glasses throughout everyday life.

When Reading Glasses Begin to Control Your Day

The change often happens slowly. At first, you may need brighter lighting to read a menu or find yourself increasing the text size on your phone. Before long, the glasses start accompanying you everywhere. They can feel inconvenient during sport, walking or travelling. You may need to remember the case, keep the lenses clean and repeatedly search for them whenever you want to check a message, read a label or look at a bill.

The emotional effect can be just as noticeable. Reading glasses are often associated with getting older, even though most people in their 40s, 50s and beyond continue to feel active, energetic and ambitious. Constantly reaching for glasses may not reflect how you feel about yourself or the lifestyle you want to lead.

Presbyopia Is Natural, but Reading Glasses Are Not Your Only Option

The gradual decline in near vision is caused by a natural age-related change known as presbyopia.

When we are younger, the natural lens inside the eye is flexible. It changes shape to bring close objects into focus. From around the age of 40, the lens gradually becomes less flexible, making it more difficult for the eye to switch its focus from distant objects to nearby text. This is why you may find yourself holding books, menus and phones further away. Small print can become tiring to read, particularly in poor light, and headaches or eye strain may develop after prolonged close work. Many people assume that reading glasses, bifocals or varifocals are the only solutions. However, modern presbyopia treatments can provide suitable patients with clearer functional vision across multiple distances and considerably reduce their reliance on glasses.

A Long-Term Solution: Greater Independence With Trifocal Lenses

One established surgical option for presbyopia is trifocal lens replacement.

During this procedure, the natural lens that has become less flexible is replaced with a carefully selected artificial intraocular lens. The new lens is positioned inside the eye, where it cannot normally be seen or felt, and is designed to remain permanently in place.

Because the natural lens has been removed, presbyopia cannot continue progressing within that lens and a cataract cannot later form in the treated eye. However, regular eye examinations remain important because other parts of the eye can still change over time.

How Do Trifocal Lenses Work?

Trifocal lenses are designed to provide useful vision across three principal focal ranges:

  • Near vision for reading books, checking messages and seeing close-up detail
  • Intermediate vision for computers, tablets, dashboards and household tasks
  • Distance vision for driving, watching television and recognising faces

Unlike varifocal glasses, the lens sits inside the eye and moves naturally with it. This means you do not need to look through a particular section of a spectacle lens to find the correct focal zone. For suitable patients, this can make everyday vision feel considerably more convenient. Sport, work and travel may require less planning, while phones, menus and other close-up tasks can be approached without constantly searching for reading glasses.

No lens can guarantee complete freedom from glasses in every situation. Some people may still prefer additional glasses for particularly detailed tasks, prolonged reading or challenging lighting conditions. A comprehensive examination is therefore essential to establish whether trifocal lenses suit your eyes and visual priorities.

Could PRESBYOND® Be an Alternative?

Lens replacement is not the only treatment available. For suitable patients over 40 whose natural lenses remain clear, PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision may provide a laser-based alternative. PRESBYOND® creates a personalised blend between the eyes. One eye is optimised mainly for distance vision while retaining some near vision, and the other is optimised mainly for near vision while retaining some distance vision. A carefully calculated Blend Zone helps the brain combine the two visual images.

The aim is to create functional vision across near, intermediate and distance ranges without replacing the natural lens. PRESBYOND® may be particularly appealing to active patients who want to reduce their reliance on reading glasses but are not yet at the stage where lens replacement is the most appropriate recommendation. The right option depends on several factors, including your age, prescription, corneal thickness, natural lens clarity, eye dominance and general eye health. EuroEyes will assess these measurements before recommending either laser or lens-based treatment.

Life After Treatment

When an Eye Surgeon Chooses EuroEyes

Even experienced eye surgeons place their trust in the clinical expertise of the EuroEyes Group. EuroEyes surgeon Dr Göran Helgason previously had implantable contact lenses. When the time came to address his changing visual needs, EuroEyes founder Dr Jørn Slot Jørgensen replaced them with trifocal lenses. The procedure offers an unusual opportunity to follow the treatment journey of an eye surgeon who has chosen the same clinical group and technology recommended to patients.

Ten Consecutive ZEISS Awards: Experience That Cannot Be Replicated Overnight

When considering surgery involving your eyesight, the quality of the technology is only one part of the decision. Accurate diagnostics, careful patient selection, surgical precision and high-quality aftercare are equally important. EuroEyes has been recognised by ZEISS as the world’s leading implanter of ZEISS trifocal lenses for ten consecutive years. This reflects the scale and consistency of the Group’s international experience in presbyopia and cataract treatment.

EuroEyes surgeons work within established clinical pathways developed through decades of specialist vision correction. This extensive experience helps the clinical team understand which patients are likely to benefit from trifocal technology and when another option may be more appropriate. Complex prescriptions or unusual eye measurements do not automatically mean that treatment is possible, but experience across a broad range of cases can support more informed assessment and highly personalised surgical planning.

You can read more about the Group’s achievement in our article celebrating ten consecutive years as the world’s leading ZEISS trifocal lens implanter.

Which Reading-Vision Treatment Is Right for You?

Trifocal lenses and PRESBYOND® address presbyopia in different ways. PRESBYOND® reshapes the cornea while retaining the natural lens, whereas trifocal lens surgery replaces the natural lens with a permanent artificial implant. Neither procedure is automatically right for everyone. Your recommendation will depend on your age, prescription, corneal measurements, natural lens health, lifestyle and expectations for near, intermediate and distance vision.

EuroEyes provides complimentary initial consultations at its London clinics in Knightsbridge and Westfield White City. Your assessment can help determine whether PRESBYOND®, trifocal lenses or another vision correction option is best suited to your eyes.
